Brass-studded Bombay Chest

$7,500.00

Rare chest composed of six thick slabs of teakwood.  Likely a marriage chest, these pieces were used to transport spices and carpets from the East during the 18th and 19th centuries.  The outside of the chest is covered in brass studs and pressed brass corner designs.  The lid of the chest is decorated with a popular motif representing the Fountain of Youth.  Other lost decorations are in process of restoration on the lid.  A hidden compartment within the chest was designed to  hold a ceremonial sword to ward off evil spirits.  Zanzibar, c. 1870.
